World famous photographer Jindřich Štreit photographed demanding work of health professionals at Emergency department of the Olomouc University hospital

Emergency department of the Olomouc University hospital treats 200 patients daily. Range of the provided care covers non-acute illnesses and injuries to primary stabilization of vital functions in life-threatening emergencies or managing mass casualties and disasters. Health profesionals of the ED quite often substitute the general practicioner´s work during out-of-office hours. Patients with any kind of medical problem or injury can find help at ED from those with life threatening condition, with severe pain or multiple injury to less severe conditions. A part of the ED is also observation unit for a short (up to 24 hours) stay.

„Emergency department should primarily take care of patients in need of emergent and urgent medical care. We try to provide appropriate care in optimal timing to all our patients despite there are so many coming to our ED. We need time, space, education, knowledge and skills to provide the highest quality care, but we also need co-operating, patient and informed patients, says head physician of Olomouc ED Dr. Vladislav Kutěj.

Patients and their relatives are not informed about the ED´s tasks and demandig work in general. Olomouc University hospital decided to contribute to better mutual understanding between patients and ED staff and to introduce work of the ED staff to public through documentary photographs of world famous photographer prof. Jiří Štreit. At the occasion of international Emergency Medicine Day on 27th May will organize a preview of photographic exhibition of world famous Czech photographer prof. Jiří Štreit.

„I have a wide experience with burdensome topics, I have been photographing in war zones, homeless people, drug addicts, prisoners or activities of mobile hospice recently. I must admitt that I have never experienced so concentrated pain as at the ED so far. I admire energy, decisiveness and profesionalism of personnel, especially in demandig situations“, says master of documentary photography, whose work can be found in world´s most famous collections, e.g. in MOMA in New York, National Gallery in Washington, Museum of Decorative Art in Prague or in Moravian Gallery in Brno.
