PANKAJ JHALDIYAL, Switzerland

The intensity of conflict in Gaza between 10-21 May 2021 has seen the gravest hostilities since 2014. More than 1900 injured and 250 killed including 66 children, bought the healthcare system to near collapse which is already crippled from chronic shortage of medical equipment, drugs, skilled manpower etc. plus the added load of Covid-19.
Despite all the challenges the Emergency department teams at various hospitals in Gaza have shown great resilience working tirelessly round the clock, fearful that amongst the patients they receive there might be a family member of their own.
The ICRC as an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence continues with its ED support program and stands by our EM colleagues here, in their unremitting endeavor to save lives.
